Dr.
Constantin Moraru, a 2003-04 Fulbright scholar from the Republic
of Moldova, is visiting the Herff College of Engineering's
Ground Water Institute at the University of Memphis for eight
months to conduct research on water quality.
Moraru
directs the hydrogeology laboratory at the Institute of Geophysics
and Geology at the Academy of Sciences in Chisinau, Moldova.
Moldova's economy is driven by agriculture, and the county
is heavily farmed. The excessive use of pesticides, including
DDT, has polluted ground water in the region. Public water
supply wells in Moldova also report high levels of selenium.
Moraru
will be comparing Moldova's ground water quality to that of
aquifer systems in the United States, particularly to that
of the Memphis aquifer, which is the primary water source
for much of the Mid-South. Memphis has some of the highest
quality ground water in the world. The goal of his research
is to help develop practices to sustain and protect Moldova's
ground water resources.
Dr.
Jerry Anderson, director of the Ground Water Institute, is
hosting Moraru during his visit.
